Jan Haskings-Winner

Jan has been teaching History and Economics for over 25 years in Malaysia, northern Ontario, Lindsay and a variety of Toronto District School Board schools, as well as teaching at faculties of education. She is the author of a few textbooks such as Canadian Sources Investigated, which provides a variety of primary sources for students to build their inquiry around different themes in Canadian history. She believes that students can develop critical thinking skills through doing history, and inquiry using historical thinking. She continues to learn with the students. She is passionate about professional development, leading as well as learning. @ohassta

Why I Use Schindler's List

This summer I went to Europe with my nieces. We visited Zurich, Krakow, Prague and Berlin. My suitcase unfortunately did not make the journey with me. At each stop, I updated Swiss Air about my location. It took 8.5 days (of the 10 we were there) for my suitcase to meet up with me. I was annoyed, and eventually had to purchase clothing in each town, and do some hand-washing to have clean clothing!

Malvern Archives in Grade 10 History Inquiry

Ever since I realized Malvern had their own archives, I have wanted to figure out how to use them in my Grade 10 Canadian History class(es). The “how” was key because I wanted to make the learning and use of archives authentic and also provide learning to meet curriculum expectations at the same time.
